In the month of April, we decided to go and distribute water
bottles to traffic wardens performing their duties along the Murree Road route.
As a place where there is congested traffic for the better part of the day it
is quite an ordeal trying to maintain order and discipline especially taking
into account how tight knitted that area is. An abundance of shops alongside
the road which connects the city to different parts of the twin cities makes it
an especially difficult area to maintain order. Unruly drivers on bikes and
cars constantly fighting each other for space on the congested area makes it a
very accident prone area. It is difficult for people to understand where the
traffic wardens are coming from. However, as we were handing out water bottles
to the traffic police officers what we observed were multiple strong willed
individual who despite the lack of facilities were trying their best to perform
their duties. The distribution of water bottles, although not the most
revolutionary act; it was our way of communicating our gratitude to them for
performing their duties to the best of their abilities despite all the odds
that are stacked against them. In return, the traffic warden were pleasantly
surprised by our gesture as rarely get any recognition for their hard work.
While with them, we got a brief glimpse of what these traffic wardens have to
face each day. The sweltering heat makes things even worse as they have to
battle not only the onslaught of traffic but also battle the heat of the sun.
This experience opened our eyes and we gained some valuable insight into the
life of police traffic wardens.
